“Excuse Me, This Seat is Taken.”

imagesCANPOS4KLike Jim Collins said in Good to Great – “Get the right people on the bus, the wrong people off the bus, and the right people in the right seats.” A task easier said than done! When it comes to hiring processes especially, there are many steps involved in finding the best candidates for positions and companies. In fact, one of the biggest challenges companies face is where to find them.

Today recruiters have to get creative and think outside the box to make that happen. In the construction industry specifically, one of the biggest trends facing companies is a lack of skilled tradespeople.

In January 2014, a Reuter’s article entitled Skilled Worker Shortage Looms for U.S. Construction Firms said it well: “According to an Associated General Contractors of America (AGC) survey, 86 percent of companies plan to start hiring this year, up from 78 percent in 2013.  At the same time, 62 percent of firms are already complaining they cannot fill key professional and craft worker positions.” When you add to that the low numbers of students wanting to enter construction trades, it is easy to get discouraged.

At Faith Technologies, we’re taking this lemon of a situation and are starting to make lemonade.  We have always had a presence in local schools (high schools, trade schools, vocational schools, colleges, etc.), and been active with community organizations that work with veterans, individuals with disabilities, minorities, or women.  But given the shortage of workers, we are taking our recruitment to the next level by creating job shadow programs and formal internship programs.

These new programs will reach into the heart of one of the populations we are trying to reach – students – to create the next generation of Faith Technologies’ employees. When you couple them with our apprenticeship programs, our career development opportunities for candidates and employees run the gamut.

Our company has already seen a great interest in both of these new programs, and we only expect to see more. Understanding we will still have to continue to put our thinking caps on to locate, hire, and retain employees; this is a challenge we will willingly undertake to make sure that our “Faith Technologies’ bus” has all the right people in the right spot… and that no seat is taken when it comes to filling it with the right candidate.
