Containerized Data Centers: Coming Soon to a Parking Lot Near You!

Power, footprint, virtualization and the cloud have all converged to signal a growth in the datacenter-in-a-box concept. In fact, a Business Wire report from 2017 predicted a 12 percent Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) expansion in this model from 2017-2021.

Whether you are backing up data before you go the cloud, running latency-sensitive computing or freeing up office space, you may want to consider a modular data center. The advantages can be many:

  • Frees up office/building space
  • Allows for a specifically designed environment without major increases to the existing building infrastructure, including:
    • Electrical Systems
    • HVAC Systems
    • Insulation
    • Security and Access
  • Avoids code issues required by changes to existing building
  • Integrates solar or other renewable power systems more easily
  • Allows expansion in a modular, as-needed basis rather than a large upfront commitment that economic or technological changes may make obsolete

Containerized data and power centers can also become an integral part of your disaster recovery program. You can deploy to any site via a flatbed truck and be operational in a matter of hours to a few days.

Of course there are other issues to be considered with containers, such as zoning and exterior space availability, but the trend will be to see more of these in the future. They may take the form of self-contained, sealed racks, to quarter-, half-, and full-sized trailer container styled buildings.

Faith Technologies’ mission critical team can help you develop your data center needs, whether conventional building or self-contained modular units. Please contact me if you’re interested in learning more.
