Faces of Faith Technologies | Meet Ben, ICIAN

At Faith Technologies, we have some amazing employees who make our culture unique. The Faces of Faith Technologies series aims to highlight the talented individuals who work with us. Each month, we’ll introduce you to several of these individuals so you can get to know the ‘Faces of Faith Technologies.’ We recently talked to Ben Netzel, a recent ICIAN program graduate. Here’s what he had to say:

What led you to work for Faith Technologies?

I have worked in many industries before Faith, but have always had a knack for energy efficiency, which was reflected in my previous work with a home weatherization company. We worked to restore homes by adding air sealing, insulation and other components to make the home more energy efficient and comfortable. After obtaining my associate degree in electronics, I thought Faith would be a good fit for me, so I pursued the specialty systems helper track.

What does your position entail?

My focus is on the installation and troubleshooting of specialty systems; sometimes I instruct crews on what tasks to complete, and most recently our crew was focused on access control and cameras for the Exact Sciences job site. I’ve also been the team lead on crews for data pulls and cabling, slowly progressing as my training and knowledge has increased. I’ve been given the opportunity to do more, and I look forward to proving what I’m capable of.

What are some of your favorite things about your job?

Troubleshooting other people’s work – it’s a challenge because you work as a detective to break down the problem, find the root cause and develop a solution. It’s gratifying when the problem is solved, and you learn something new from each issue.

One of the more interesting jobs I’ve worked on was the solar projects in Minnesota last year; I was tasked with creating the fiber link between the solar panels, the battery storage and the grid. In off-peak demand time, the batteries would charge from the energy absorbed by the panels, and then during demand time the energy would be redistributed back to the grid for use. My task helped those three components communicate during energy transfer times, and it’s something I’m proud of.

What will you take away from the ICIAN training?

Knowing what the future looks like regarding how businesses will operate and manage their resources and energy. Understanding the business side of electricity gives you a clear target of what’s important, which helps you extend that value to the customer. We’re facing a labor shortage combined with energy consumption peaks, and we’re going to need a new smart infrastructure grid to handle it.

What are your hobbies or interests outside of work?

Our family loves music; we all play our own instruments, and I’ve been a drummer for over 25 years. My wife, Julia, plays the flute and keyboards, and is in a local band. Our daughter, Ariel, (13) plays trombone, and Acacia (11) plays an electric guitar – even our five-year-old, Amber, has her own drum set! We have three drum sets in our house, so we’re a loud bunch.

My daughters have recorded albums for me when I’m away working; it’s such a special thing we share with music. I love music because it transcends time and space – you can listen to a song from 20 years ago and it brings you back to that moment. Music helps you through the tough times, and I believe it’s the universal language. I’m also a huge enthusiast for RC cars! I have a few outdoor off-road ones I enjoy driving around.

Are there any personal accomplishments you’d like to share?

One of my personal accomplishments was completing my associate degree, because I showed my children it’s never too late to go back to school, and you can achieve anything you set your mind to. Having a beautiful, happy and healthy family is my biggest accomplishment. It’s so easy for people to walk away from committed relationships, but I believe if you’re with the right person those challenges are worth it.

What’s your why?

What drives me is being a part of a team and not wanting to let others down. I want to do my part and fulfill my role; give everything I have and hope it’s enough.
