Faces of Faith Technologies | Meet Dalton, Apprentice

At Faith Technologies, we have some amazing employees who make our culture unique. The Faces of Faith Technologies series aims to highlight the talented individuals who work with us. Each month, we’ll introduce you to several of these individuals so you can get to know the ‘Faces of Faith Technologies.’ We recently talked to Dalton Free, an apprentice from Sheboygan, WI. Here’s what he had to say:

What led you to work for Faith Technologies?

During high school, we were presented with many opportunities to pursue a career following our graduation; although I was unsure which path fit for me, I knew I didn’t want to burden myself with debt by pursuing a four-year degree. Knowing I had an interest in electrical work, a family friend, Ryan Engelman (a journeyman working for Faith), recommended I apply for the youth apprentice program at Faith.

The apprenticeship experience solidified I was on the right career path. I enjoy being busy, and appreciate the new curriculum we’re being taught in the classroom. The teachers ask us what we’re looking to gain from education, and ensure we’re confident in our skills. It’s a different learning environment than what I’m used to, and it motivates me to continue learning.

What does your position entail?

My foreman, youth apprentice and I work to complete the wiring on large enclosure generators and generator systems. After reviewing our operational risk management (ORM) board for the day, we split up to complete tasks on different generators. Our crew installs electrical packages within the generators, including lights, switches, outlets, vent fans and heaters, as required.

The generators vary in size from 20-100 feet long, and are used as backup power for residential homes and marine operations. The larger generators can back up industrial companies and data centers. If there is a shipment that’s high priority, my foreman and I will work together to finish the generator and make the customer’s deadline.

What I enjoy the most about my position is never being bored and learning hands on alongside more experienced employees. While it can be difficult to master complex skills, I’m focused on learning and not taking shortcuts to make sure I’m working safely and delivering accurate work for our customer.

What are your hobbies or interests outside of work?

Faith Technologies - Dalton Free

I enjoy hunting geese and deer; we’re lucky to be able to hunt geese in the field behind our home, and we have family friends nearby who let us hunt deer on their land. Hunting is a sport of patience and observation, and I appreciate the time outside with my family and friends.

My family does a lot of fishing on Lake Michigan during the summer. The lake frequently experiences rapid weather changes and large waves, keeping us on our toes whenever we head out. That’s part of why I love it, the constant challenge and then being able to bring something home to show for the effort.

My family lives in Sheboygan, and we spend a great deal of time together. My friends and I like to play basketball, throw around a football and workout together, as well. It’s exciting to think about my future both professionally and personally.

Where do you see yourself in five years?

I hope to have my journeyman’s card within five years, and progress to running my own jobs as a foreman. I also have my sights set on obtaining my master’s license, because I know that the more I learn with Faith the more I can contribute and help our team succeed.
