Faces of Faith Technologies | Meet Kayla, Electrical Apprentice

At Faith Technologies, we have some amazing employees who make our culture unique. The Faces of Faith Technologies series aims to highlight the talented individuals who work with us. Each month, we’ll introduce you to several of these individuals so you can get to know the ‘Faces of Faith Technologies.’ We recently talked to Kayla Connor, a level 1 apprentice aspiring to achieve her journeyman’s and master’s licenses. Here’s what she had to say:

What led you to work for Faith Technologies?

After graduating from high school, I worked in fast-food, factories and catering, but I was tired of working jobs that wouldn’t provide a long-term career path. My brother, Todd, began working for Faith in 2018, and recommended I apply, knowing I appreciate hands-on work.

It was difficult to move away from my family and hometown, but I’ve never been happier! From my first day at Faith, I knew I was working for a company that cared, and that motivates me to do my best each day. My initial goal was to complete a data apprenticeship, but after some exposure, switched paths to become an electrician. Electricians must master power, data and electrical work – a challenge I’m looking forward to!

What does your position entail?

My seniority on the project has provided me with opportunities to grow; I currently lead a small deck crew, and I’m a short service employee mentor. Being a mentor has been a rewarding experience, and I work to help my mentee understand the basic skills and strategies for being successful. Our deck crew is currently working to complete the top level of a parking podium.

After a virtual design and construction (VDC) member sets our points (where each electrical piece needs to be placed) in the room, we layout the wiring and complete the rough-in (pulling electrical cables along and through mats made of rebar and terminating them in lighting boxes). Using the layout provided by VDC, we install the electrical pieces, and concrete is poured to seal the room.

What is the most important part of your job?

Safety! Our site has tower cranes to assist with moving material or shoring for the floors; while it’s efficient, it can be dangerous, so we’re always on the watch to be sure the project team blows the warning whistle prior to moving material, ensuring the site stays safe.

This hazard has prompted our team to blow the whistle if we see the crane moving, ensuring the site stays safe. We also take more time to prepare if we are using harnesses or tools we haven’t used recently, to be sure they’re working in proper condition and we understand how to use them.

What are some of your favorite things about your job?

I love that I’m always learning; I’m surrounded by employees with different experience levels, and enjoy gaining their feedback or advice so I can continue to improve and grow.

What are some of your hobbies or interests outside of work?

Kayla Connor - FOFT - Collage

I grew up being outside, so my hobbies revolve around that lifestyle. My father is a gunsmith, so my family frequently practiced shooting at ranges, and eventually began to compete in long-range rifle competitions! Hunting is a family affair as well; we hunt deer, turkey, rabbits and even groundhogs.

Fishing trout is also a favorite past time, my favorite place to go is Bull Creek in upper Pennsylvania; I normally don’t catch much, but I still enjoy the experience! In addition to fishing, I kayak frequently and am excited to find new spots throughout Tennessee this summer. Outside of my hobbies, my family means the world to me. My little sister, Cameryn, is my best friend, so I try to keep in contact and travel home when I can.

Are there any personal accomplishments you’d like to share?

I grew up in a small town without many career opportunities, where everyone around me just accepted that as their reality. Moving so far away and taking this risk to improve my life is one of my biggest accomplishments. I’ve grown so much, become confident in my skills and am happy to be where I am. I’m creating my own reality and securing my future as an electrician, redefining what’s possible!
