Faith Technologies Project Spotlight: University of Kansas – Central District Development

Faith Technologies was proud to work with the joint venture of Clark Construction and McCown Gordon to expand the University of Kansas campus through the Central District Development project. Faith was brought into this project early on, participating in design meetings with the project owner, architect and engineers.

This collaboration continued throughout the duration of the approximately 340,000 square foot project, and a large amount of construction was completed over a short period of time. Project components included:

  • 285,000 square-foot integrated science facility for academic and research science space, including labs, classrooms, offices and meeting space
  • 26,500 square-foot student union facility with conference space
  • Four-story, 595-space parking structure to support the additional demand in the Central District
  • Central utility plant to support these new facilities and provide future resiliency for the campus
  • 55-acre site development including site lighting, fiber duct bank and medium-voltage loop and equipment

Faith successfully met the needs of this ambitious project head-on through the use of two major differentiators:

  • Excellerate Manufacturing: 14 percent of Faith’s project hours were moved to Excellerate, increasing productivity, as well as providing new and innovative products that saved time and gave the customer a better product.
  • Virtual Design and Construction (VDC) / Preconstruction: Due to the complexity and magnitude of the project, we knew we would need to preplan and work as efficiently as possible. Faith completed nearly 12,000 hours of VDC/Preconstruction work offsite, with 10,000 data points shot with Trimble at 99 percent accuracy.

Our team also provided 100 percent of the LED lighting to the entire project, including three integrated dimming control systems. The medium voltage work included a new 15kv loop, 5kv switch board, three sectionalizer switches and three 2500kva transformers. There were three separate integrated dimming control systems: a large ballroom that can be divided into four separate areas, and two systems in active learning classrooms.

Faith’s teamwork and leadership led to an extremely successful project outcome. The parking structure was completed 18 months ahead of schedule, and the remainder of the project was finished three months ahead of schedule, and under budget.

It was an honor to contribute to this highly visible project. Congratulations to all involved!
