Faith Technologies Project Spotlight: UW-Whitewater, Starin Hall

University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, Starin HallFaith Technologies is proud to have recently been recognized for its work by the Associated Builders & Contractors (ABC) of Wisconsin 2011 Projects of Distinction Awards program for the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, Starin Hall.

The $4,157,120, new construction project consists of two, five-story (including a basement) residential wings linked by a glass skyway on the upper floors, and totals 196,200 square feet to create an independent living space for junior, senior, and graduate students that is still part of the university’s campus.

Faith Technologies’ scope of work included a large wireless build-out with 70 access points, as well as all the electrical work (100 percent) including the lighting, fire alarm systems, access control, service installation, generator installation, medium voltage installation, voice and data systems, and CATV. Throughout the construction process, 19 internal safety audits were also completed to ensure that the jobsite maintained the safest construction environment possible.

The Starin Hall project showed great strides in elevating industry standards with regards to sustainable practices. It earned the United States Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold Certification, and is the first state-owned LEED residence hall in the State of Wisconsin. The overall layout and design of the building and surrounding landscaping lend to the LEED requirements of “green space” and environmental awareness.

This building was also constructed around the principles of “universal design.” It has several unique accommodations including 38 bedrooms that meet the American with Disabilities Act (ADA) requirement for handicapped accessibility (more than four times the code required minimum for residential facilities of this nature), 19 “universal design” four-person suites (twice the number required under the ADA), 90 traditional four-person suites, 10 resident assistant suites, a computer lab in the main lobby, multi-purpose rooms, and dividable seminar rooms.

The end result of this project was the creation a residence hall that exceeded the expectations put forth by the design team, as well as the students and faculty. Not only does the new facility offer a “universal design” that accommodates all residents, it is also equipped with a unique “green” environment that is unmatched in the State of Wisconsin. It was truly an honor to be part of this successful project.
