Gaining Safety Buy-In From Everyone

At Faith Technologies, safety is at the forefront of everything we do. Many of our safety team members have written previous blog articles about our safety training and processes and how they affect our overall results; however getting everyone on board for safety can be the most difficult part, if it is not done at the right time and demonstrated by the right behavior.

Let me explain. It would be a waste of time if Faith Technologies’ executive leadership was sending the message that our goal is to achieve and sustain zero injuries beginning tomorrow, if we were seeing injuries repeating regularly without investigating and addressing the causes. If team members didn’t understand why injuries were occurring, or weren’t supported with processes or procedures to tighten up performance, how could they work toward the goal of zero injuries? People can see right through an imperative that is only talk and not action, and this type of approach will not achieve buy-in.

At Faith Technologies, we were proud to finish 2019 with a Total Recordable Incident Rate (TRIR) of 0.42, compared to the national average of 2.4 for electrical contractors. However, the process to get to this number was an evolution. It took us several years of continuous improvement before we reached the performance we had in 2016 (1.16 TRIR), then it took a few more years before the steps were finally made to achieve 0.42 in 2019. These were years of Faith Technologies’ leadership not only saying that safety was our number one core value, but also supporting that through investments in training, equipment and resources to ensure that every employee knows that being safe comes before everything else.

An organization’s safety culture can’t transform overnight. It takes a lot of hard work and commitment from every single employee. At Faith Technologies, we believe the journey to zero injuries is possible.
