Just-in-Time Learning

Just-in-Time Learning In today’s fast-paced environment, learning departments are under pressure to deliver learning quickly and efficiently with as little disruption to the individual’s job as possible. That is quite a challenge, but one of the ways learning professionals are able to meet those needs is by providing more just-in-time learning opportunities.

While traditional learning is delivered in a specific location at a specific time, just-in-time learning allows individuals to learn anytime, anyplace, and in any increment of time – allowing the learner to receive the training when they need it. There are several advantages to this. It not only allows learners to obtain the training on their own terms, but it also makes them more apt to retain the knowledge, since they are able to apply their newly acquired knowledge/skills right away – making them less likely to require additional or refresher training in the future.

Here are three strategies for implementing just-in-time learning in your organization:

  1. Provide e-learning opportunities: Implementing a learning management system, such as Moodle, enables organizations to house a number of online courses that employees are able to access anywhere and at any time. The result is an increased delivery of information “just in time” while on the job.
  2. Use content management platforms to share knowledge: Collaboration software, such as Microsoft SharePoint, allows organizations and employees alike to set up web sites to share information with others. By sharing ideas and expertise via posted documents, announcements, and links to other sites, the use of SharePoint makes it possible for users to get the information they need when and where they need it.
  3. Create job aids and quick reference guides: Since job aids and quick reference guides typically provide step-by-step instructions on how to perform fundamental tasks, they make excellent “just in time” learning tools. They improve job performance because they can be accessed and referenced as needed.

Having successfully implemented each of these strategies, I am certain you will find these simple yet effective ways to ensure just-in-time learning is happening within your organization.
