What’s the Magic – The Key that Unlocks Productivity?

ProductivityWhile productivity is not an illusion, one can certainly say it is elusive. While there is no silver bullet, there is one key ingredient that serves as the foundation for all successful productivity efforts – people. When not considered and utilized, “underutilized people” are identified as the number one waste in a Lean Culture.

A quote by Mahatma Gandhi says it best – “The difference in what we do and what we are capable of doing would suffice to solve most of the world’s problems.” This could also be stated – “The difference in what we can do and what we are asked to do would suffice to solve most of our problems.

Obviously, we must balance concern for people with concern for production.

  • Concern for People:  This is the degree to which a leader/organization considers the needs of team members, their interests, their input, and areas of personal development when deciding how best to accomplish a task.
  • Concern for Production:  This is the degree to which a leader/organization emphasizes concrete objectives, organizational efficiency and high productivity when deciding how best to accomplish a task.

In my next blog article, I will allude to the five leadership styles outlined in Robert Blake and Jane Mouton’s book called The Managerial Grid, and discuss how placing too much emphasis in one area at the expense of another leads to low overall productivity.
