Why Use Moodle as a Learning Management System?

MoodleIf you are involved in education or training, you’ve probably heard about the rising trend of using Moodle for online learning. As an open-source learning management system (LMS), Moodle is, in my opinion, one of the best solutions for creating effective online learning environments. Due to its versatile and collaborative nature, it is the ideal forum for hosting and delivering courses online. Specifically, here are my top four reasons for using Moodle as a learning management system:

  • It’s free. Unlike some other online course or learning management systems, such as Blackboard, Moodle is open-source, which means it is free to download.
  • It’s easily accessible. Since everything on Moodle can be accessed via most web browsers using most devices, as long as an internet connection is available, it is easily accessible. This is especially important when you have remote learners and/or learners whose only access to technology may be their personal computers.
  • It’s easy to use. Whether you are a student, teacher, or administrator, you will find Moodle easy to use due to its intuitive user interface. Its use of clearly marked icons, bread crumbs, and browser buttons make it easy to navigate within Moodle whether you are participating in one of the collaborative activities (such as the chat or forum), developing a course, or adjusting settings within Moodle.
  • It’s student-centered. Designed with sound learning principles in mind, Moodle gives students the opportunity to work independently and interdependently. Students learn how to understand and process information on their own via online courses, and they also learn to collaborate and work together in student-centered learning activities, such as wikis, forums, chats, etc. The result is an environment customized to assist with the typical tasks of running courses and flexible enough to support innovative teaching methods.

As you can see, Moodle has great potential. If you are looking to try something exciting and innovative for your organization, Moodle just may be the answer.
